Saint Motel - Voyeur

Saint Motel - Voyeur

E se vi viene voglia di ballare, mettete Hands Up Robert e Feed Me Now a palla e scatenatevi. Ascolto d’obbligo 1997 e At Least I Have Nothing.

Acquistabile via iTunes e in CD/vinile.

Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania (review)

The new Smashing Pumpkins album Oceania is Corgan’s desperate need to return to the original Pumpkins’ sound of the ’90s with another, more professional perhaps, line-up. Sound-wise he hits the nail on the head, but we still miss the harsh, melancholic, introspective songwriting that left Pumpkinland with the demise of the old members.

Something good, even excellent, comes out anyway; pick the title-track Oceania with its Mellon Collie-ish flavour or the opener Quasar - as good as I Am One could be if written today. Yet there’s still space to experiment with synth and electronic sounds, either successfully (Pinwheels) or not (One Diamonds, One Heart).

We have almost the whole Pumpkins’ sound collection here, from Gish to Machina II to Corgan’s solo/side project (ill fated Zwan included). Teargarden’s sound is anyway getting a shape, for the good or the bad, and one might hint that this is what the new Smashing Pumpkins will sound in the foreseeable future.

All in all, if you don’t listen too much to some/most of the lyrics, you might say “Welcome back Pumpkins”; but if Corgan’s poetry hold a special place in your heart, or in your mind, you might be a bit confused or disappointed. Still, a solid album worth of listening and a welcome comeback.

Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys

And when you’re lookin’ in the mirror what you see is gon’ astound you.

I Death Cab for Cutie (un’ossessione per la bellezza, la loro, che parte già dal loro nome) riescono a dispiegarla quasi ovunque, qualsiasi cosa facciano, cantino o suonino: bisogna davvero impegnarsi a non trovare belle liriche come “we are the same / we are both safe / underneath the sycamore” o “somewhere down, down / down in the ocean of sound, sound / we’ll live in slow-motion / and be free”.

Da non perdere la title-track Codes and Keys, Doors Unlocked and Open e Underneath the Sycamore.
